Engine back in and running 300 HP!!

A few weeks ago our K22 engine came back from it’s trip to UK. Rebuild and ready to rumble.
We mounted the engine back in the car and modified some minor details. Always exciting when you push the starter button for the first time again, but no problems at all. Everything was running perfectly.
To finetune the engine again another dynorun was needed, therefore we went back to DP Engineering. This time the magical 300 number was getting pretty close. Martijn managed to tune it with the Hondata Kpro to an astonishing 300,2HP with 275Nm of torque. All of that without using a turbo or supercharger. NA all the way.
Next up is fixing some minor things with suspension setup and we have to finish the front splitter. After that next Time Attack season may as well get started.

First test, first major problem!!

We sure had some fun during our first testing day but it soon turned all around.

The Engine got overheated during the day and when we got back home the problem became obvious. The head was ‘warped’. Best thing to do was sending it back to the UK. The people who built it are going to fix it for us. We are hoping in getting it back very shortly so we can have some test days this year. We can say we didn’t make it to participate in Time Attack this year, ever more reason to make it happen next year!!!

Finally, the first shakedown.

28th of August a new event came up. We were desperately trying to get the car ready before that. Some last details still had to be done but no major stuff. We had to make sure the car was running properly so we didn’t lose face during Superlap so we planned a shakedown on Zandvoort circuit.
August 24 was the big day!!
To get the car really ready for track we still had some things to do. It was way to loud with the Ape garage custom exhaust, this should only take one lap before we get the black flag. Regulations are very strict over here in Holland according to sound levels. Another problem was a ticking fuel pump. That should be the first problem to take on. After that trouble really started.
The car wasn’t running properly anymore, we tried everything but nothing seem to work. After a few hours we found a clogged fuel filter, that was our problem. We fixed the fuel filter and attacked the next problem, NOISE!
As always time was running out and we still had to weld a silencer in our exhaust. A big warehouse like the one we have here seemed useful again. A Megan Racing Evo 8 cat convertor should do the trick. Our friends over at Jeroentje.nl could weld it in for us, 10pm we got over to Haaren and they got the job done nicely.
Exhaust had to be mounted and we had to get all things together for our track day. Way past midnight all was done and we could get/needed some sleep.
The next morning we took off to Zandvoort.

Unfortunately it was raining the entire morning ant there was nothing we could really do other than wait. We only had the Toyo semi slick tires with us. After a few hours Ronald was getting restless and decided to subscribe for a heat.

In the end we managed to participate in 3 sessions. In the last one we had some problems with parts getting loose due to heavy vibrations on the engine. Using very hard engine mounts payed his toll. Some things we have to take a closer look on for the next time!!

Diffusor fabrication

To create enough downforce on our track car we decided to make the entire bottom flat en use a rear diffusor. The diffusor is made of ABS plastic to keep it light and flexibel.

Japanese car festival & Time Attack round 2 2011

Last May the second big event of this years season was held. On the paddock of Circuit park Zandvoort there where a lot of clubs present with this time only Japanese cars. On track, round 2 of this years Time Attack series. Our friends over at RPMVision made another great movie to recap the entire day. Enjoy!!

Custom ApeGarage exhaust system.

All things coming together now, almost ready to fire the engine up for the very first time. But there is one important bit we didn’t spent any time on so far. The exhaust system. We did however think about it, what’s best for the job, an after market system? Witch brand? Stainless steel or even titanium? What system is going to be quiet enough for track regulations, with a very very very loud k20?

All these things considering the best way to go was to make a custom exhaust system with vibrant mufflers connected to the Megan racing race-header. It would be a 3inch system. For this job we called in Kel from the ApeGarage, he just makes great things. Check it out on http://www.ape-garage.nl/
